Mainstream
At Cumberland Community School, our Mainstream SEN Department is committed to inclusive excellence. We believe every student deserves access to high-quality teaching that empowers them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our ethos is rooted in the principles of cognitive similarity, adaptive teaching, and dignity for all learners.
Our Aim
To create classrooms where every learner belongs, is challenged appropriately, and is supported to develop confidence, independence, and resilience.
What We Believe
- Learning is more similar than different: We embrace the evidence that most learners, regardless of need, benefit from high-quality, well-structured teaching. We focus on universal strategies that enhance understanding and engagement for all students.
- Inclusion is not separation: SEND support should not be about removal from the classroom, but about intelligent, intentional adaptations within it.
- Labels do not define learners: We resist overdiagnosis and low expectations. Our focus is on strengths, potential, and progress.
- Consistency, not complexity: Inclusive classrooms succeed through routines, clarity, and structured support—not endless differentiation.
- Support is a shared responsibility: SEND is not the job of one team. It is a whole-school commitment, with the SEN team providing expert guidance, intervention and training.
How We Work
- We use the Graduated Approach to ensure the right support is delivered at the right time, ranging from universal classroom strategies to specialist interventions.
- We promote the EDI Framework (Explicit Direct Instruction) to ensure lessons are accessible, structured, and supportive for all.
- We advocate for minimal but meaningful adaptations, avoiding unnecessary complexity while meeting individual needs.
- We support staff with intellectual preparation, practical tools, and ongoing coaching to make inclusive teaching a daily habit.
- We collaborate with families, professionals, and students to co-produce meaningful goals and provision that lead to improved outcomes.
