Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy and numeracy underpin success across the entire curriculum. We help all our students learn and develop these skills in the following ways.

Literacy

Integrating Literacy in Every Lesson

To ensure comprehensive skill development, literacy isn't confined to one subject; it's explicitly embedded in all learning:

  • Curriculum Mapping: Literacy expectations are a key, planned element within all departmental schemes of work.
  • Daily Practice: Teachers regularly integrate and model literacy skills, ensuring they are a core part of all planning, teaching, and monitoring activities across every subject.

Fostering Active Reading

We actively encourage strong, independent reading habits to build vocabulary, comprehension, and critical engagement:

  • Constant Access: Students are expected to carry an appropriately challenging reading book with them at all times to promote active, independent reading.
  • Resource Utilisation: Regular library visits are scheduled into both English curriculum time and dedicated mentoring time to ensure students can access and engage with a wide variety of texts.

Whole-School Support and Enrichment

We maintain a supportive school environment that celebrates literacy and provides targeted assistance when needed:

  • Enrichment: Whole-school literacy-based activities and competitions are calendared throughout the academic year to celebrate and promote reading and writing skills.
  • Targeted Interventions: We provide targeted interventions for students who require extra literacy support, ensuring all learners can access the curriculum successfully.

Numeracy

Integrating Numeracy in Every Lesson

We ensure comprehensive numeracy skills are built by teaching and practicing them across the entire curriculum:

  • Curriculum Mapping: Numeracy expectations are a key, planned element within all departmental schemes of work, ensuring consistent reinforcement across subjects (where appropriate).
  • Daily Practice: Teachers regularly integrate and model numeracy skills, ensuring they are a core part of all planning, teaching, and monitoring activities across every subject.
  • Planning Clarity: Numeracy skills are clearly identified on Medium-Term Plans (MTP) for relevant subjects, making the mathematical goals of the lesson transparent.

Monitoring and Enrichment

We maintain a supportive school environment that celebrates numeracy and ensures our high standards are met:

  • Quality Assurance: We regularly monitor the implementation of numeracy strategies through learning walks and book looks to ensure skills are consistently developed and applied.
  • Enrichment: Whole-school numeracy-based activities and competitions, such as the challenging UKMT Mathematics Challenge, are calendared throughout the academic year to celebrate and promote analytical thinking.
