Why do you have to study Mathematics?

Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all students in Key Stage 4. While studying Mathematics you will:

  • use mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems
  • use logic and reason to solve problems
  • break down problems into small steps in order to solve them
  • use the skills you learn to solve real life problems.

Mathematics opens a wide range of career pathways including accountancy,  banking and finance, engineering, IT as well as many more. 

How will I be examined?

You will sit three exams at the end of Year 11 which are worth 100% of the total mark, there is no coursework. All of the exams: 

  • are worth 80 marks (one non-calculator and two calculator papers)
  • have questions arranged with the easiest questions first, getting progressively harder
  • have a mixture of short and long questions
  • may ask you to solve a problem in any area that you have studied
  • are 1hr 30min long
  • will be graded from 1-9, with 9 being the highest grade (higher tier grades are from 4-9 and foundation grades 1-5). 

What will I study?

GCSE Mathematics covers a wide range of basic mathematical knowledge and skills, grouped into the following areas:

  • Ratio, proportion and ates of change 
  • Algebra
  • Probability and statistics 
  • Geometry & measures.
